New DC Towing Laws: What You Need to Know

In early 2025, D.C. rolled out updates to its towing regulations — and if you drive or park in the city, you’ll want to take note.

Under the new rules, vehicles can now be towed in as little as 30 minutes in some zones if parked illegally. The Department of Public Works (DPW) says the goal is to reduce congestion — but residents may face surprise tows.

What’s changed:

  • ⚠️ Faster towing in active or emergency areas
  • 📸 License plate scanning for faster ticketing
  • 🚨 Real-time integration with tow operators
  • 🕓 Shorter grace periods
